Who are the Fitness League?

line

The Fitness League, a well established nationwide exercise network, sponsored by Sport England and Sport Scotland, teaches rhythmic exercise to music. The TFL Technique is based on encouraging correct posture which releases the body's potential for good health.

The TFL Technique

When time is such a precious commodity, it's easy for all of us to forget to devote any to ourselves, yet just an hour or two every week of regular exercise, not only improves health, fitness, flexibility and stamina levels, but also ensures that a tiny slice of that precious time is yours - and yours alone - without anyone else making demands on your time.

Part dance, part exercise, the TFL Technique teaches rhythmic movement to music to energise and strengthen the whole body.

Regular practice of the TFL Technique leads to:

  • Improved posture
  • More energy
  • A toned body
  • Increased muscular strength and flexible joints.
  • Better coordination and stability
Classes are fun, varied and include exercises to strengthen abdominals to achieve the 'central control' so essential for safe, effective exercise and good posture. Soon you look taller and leaner – without losing a pound!

Is it for you?

  • Yes! The TFL Technique is for women of all ages and fitness levels. Just put something comfortable on and come along!
  • We also have junior classes.
  • And, if you’re really keen, you can even go on to teach!

Worried about weight?

  • If weight loss is 60% diet and 40% exercise then practising the TFL Technique will certainly increase you metabollic rate.
  • Regular practice of the TFL Technique will also improve your shape, tone and posture to make you look slimmer
  • It changes the way you feel about yourself.

TFL Technique Classes

What is it about a TFL Technique class that makes it much more than just another exercise class?

Maybe it’s the fun? Or the gain without pain? Or the quality of the teaching in a non-competitive environment?

Whatever the reason, when you join a TFL Technique class you can expect two things to happen almost immediately – decreased stress and increased energy.

Why not join today and find out?

We have:

  • Over 14,000 members
  • 400 classes every week

The Fitness League was founded in 1930 by Mollie Bagot Stack, a woman ahead of her time in the field of women’s health and fitness. Since those early pioneering days, Mollie Bagot Stack’s ideas on the connection between exercise and good health have become accepted wisdom.

Her system of exercise is endorsed by many health professionals including GPs, nurses, and physiotherapists.

The teachers ensure that everyone exercises at their own level
Great exercise whatever your age, ability or current fitness levels.
The teachers ensure that everyone exercises at their own level – whatever their age, ability, or level of fitness – and so our Members enjoy a challenge, a sense of achievement and increased confidence.

The Fitness League has woven together many influential strands of knowledge over the years, developing and adapting exercises according to new ideas and medical research, but what has not changed is the original ethos. Safe, effective and fun exercise provided by professionally trained teachers in a relaxed and sociable environment.

What is the Bagot System?

There are seven main points around which the system has been developed:

  • Correct Posture
  • Joint Mobilising, Muscle Strengthening and Lengthening
  • Co-Ordinated Movement
  • Relaxation
  • Breathing
  • Music
  • Graded Classwork
Correct posture
A 'steady centre' for the body is made by ensuring correct pelvic tilt. The lower back and abdominal muscles are strengthened in order to achieve and maintain correct pelvic tilt. Mobility and lift of the ribs up and away from the strongly-held centre ensures a lightly poised spine. The shoulders are mobilised to let them relax down and back, releasing tension and stress. The head is poised lightly on top of the spine and the weight of the body falls just in front of the ankles.

Stretching is an important part of exercise
Stretching through the spine awakens the whole body.

Joint mobilising, muscle strengthening and lengthening
This ensures mobility, relaxation, and control in movement which enables the body to work with maximum efficiency. The emphasis is on fitness for life, rather than on muscle building.

Co-ordinated movement
This enhances and develops harmony between mind and body.

Relaxation
Relaxation is important both when working with the exercises and when the body is still.

Breathing exercises
These help to enhance awareness of how we routinely breath, increase the flexibility and mobility of the muscles used in breathing and increase breathing capacity.

Music
Both contemporary and traditional music is used to assist the pace and rhythm of the exercises and add to the exhilaration, enjoyment and fun of the exercises.

Graded classwork
This ensure exercises begin simply and are suitable for all ages and abilities. The work then progresses to more advanced exercises linked to familiarity and ability.

The system also incorporates the 'Stretch and Swing' principle wherein, from a steady centre, one stretches and then moves with a rhythmic swing, thus producing maximum efficiency of movement with minimum effort.

In recognition of the original aims of Mollie Bagot Stack, we still aim to make our classes affordable to as wide a range of people as possible. TFL is a non-profit making organisation.
