Phonographic Performance Licence (PPL)
Your PPL licence is a legal requirement if you play recorded music in class. All teachers doing so must have a licence. Preferential rates have been negotiated by the EMDP for all their teachers. The licence is renewed every September. Contact the office if you think you should have one!
Insurance for teachers and members
Civil Liability Insurance cover is in place for teachers and paid-up class members. The limit of liability is currently £5m. The insurance only covers those class members who have paid their Class Membership fee. If you are taking any classes where the participants are not FL members, an additional fee is payable. Contact the office for information.
The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) is a national register for qualified instructors, coaches, trainers and teachers who have achieved government-approved qualifications and training.
The Fitness League teacher qualification entitles you to apply to be on the Register at Advanced Level 3, conditional on your having insurance cover and a commitment to ongoing professional development. If you are not on the Register and want to be, contact the office who will manage the process for you.
The Exercise Movement and Dance Partnership (EMDP) was created in 2002 by the three founder partners, Fitness League, Medau Society and Keep Fit Association, to protect and promote the future of each organisation using their collective force for the benefit of all.
In 2006 Sport England contributed 50% of the funding required for their Whole Sport Plan 2006-2009 with the balance being contributed equally by the three partners. The EMDP employs a team of 7 full and part-time professional staff. Underpinning the work of the EMDP is the fact that the three brands (FL, KFA and Medau) remain separate and distinct. Further investment from Sport England has been secured for 2009-2012.
EMDP Combined Training Framework (CTF)
The first tutor training course was held as part of the EMDP Combined Training Framework which launched in April 2010. All potential tutors from the 3 partner organisations (Keep Fit Association, the Medau Society and Fitness League) trained together in the common core modules.
The new qualification is now acredited by CYQ (Central YMCA Qualifications) and is on the National Qualifications Framework.
